'Shrooms, Say What?!

Many times when my fellow Sustainably Interns and I mention "Meatless Monday", some students shy away. We realize giving up meat one day a week is a bit daunting for some students because many of their meals revolve around meat. For some, eating meat is all about the experience. The comfort of sinking your teeth into a thick, juicy piece of meat infused with lots of spices can make it difficult to give up. But there is a food that will give the eater that same experience, with the thick, juicy texture and the infused spices. Let's indulge in a succulent 'shroom!

Don't click away yet! Mushrooms are not as scary as they sound and if prepared right, could give you that same satisfying feeling and taste that a burger does! Mushrooms are said to be the most underestimated superfood. They are low in carbohydrates, calories, and sodium- three things that meat tends to have high levels of. They have a high value of fiber, protein, vitamin B, and potassium! And are cholesterol and fat free! In fact, substituting red meat for white button mushrooms will lead to weight loss! Don't believe me, check out this study!

The Weight Management Center at John's Hopkins Bloomburg School of Public Health conducted a year-long study on the weight loss of patients who swapped out meat for mushrooms. They found that their patients lost weight, took inches off of their waste circumference and lowered their Body Mass Index! This is an effective weight loss method because it lowers fat intake while still giving a full and satisfied feeling after a meal.

AND Another great things about Mushrooms is that THEY CAN BE BOUGHT LOCALLY! Yep, so you'd be super sustainable by making a meatless local mushroom dish!

*Remember that not all mushrooms are edible and some are highly poisonous. Do your homework before picking a mushroom out of the wild!
