Philadelphia: Home of the Liberty Bell, The Phillies, and Meatless Philly Cheesesteaks!

During the Monday, noontime lunch hour of Philadelphia, something different is happening. Instead of serving up their classic, hometown favorite, the Philly Cheesesteak, Donald F, Schwarz, commissioner of the Philadelphia Public Health, and councilmen Bill Green, are encouraging the citizens of Philly to enjoy their Philly Cheesesteak, but minus the steak!

Last week, City Council of Philadelphia unanimously passed a resolution in support of Meatless Monday. By making this change, the city hopes to encourage healthier eating habits, by promoting the consumption of more fruits and vegetables, while decreasing both their obesity numbers, and environmental footprint.

But will this Cheesesteak loving down be able to part with their main ingredient? Councilman Bill Green's says he believes his city is prepared to take on the challenge! He sees this as a step in the direction of making their city a healthier, and doing their part in reducing the city's environmental impact.

“We can combat the epidemic of obesity, improve long-term health outcomes, and potentially reduce the impact of livestock on global warming through this one, simple effort".

To help with the transition, the Department of Public Heath are putting together a variety of programs to help encourage the consumption of fruits and vegetables, over meat.  One program called, Philly Bucks, aids lower income families to have greater access to more fruits and vegetables, by giving $2 fruit/vegetable credits, for every $5 spent at farmer's markets for families who are eligible to receive Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.  A recent study showed shoppers that used the program were twice as likely to buy fruits and vegetables than those who didn't.

Philadelphia is now is now one of five cities to have passed Meatless Monday Resolutions including other cities such as, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Baltimore, and Oakland.

So congratulations Philly for accepting the challenge and embracing the Meatless Monday way! We are excited to try your new tempeh filled cheesesteak sandwiches!
